Precision Resource Breaks Ground on Two AM Facilities with 3D Systems

On October 28, 3D Systems and Precision Resource announced the groundbreaking of two new additive manufacturing locations — in Huntington Beach, California, and Shelton, Connecticut — deepening their partnership and expanding metal AM capacity for commercial and defense customers.

Precision Resource, headquartered in Shelton, Connecticut and founded in 1947, produces critical metal components for the automotive, heavy-duty, aerospace, and medical device industries. Its capabilities span fine blanking, grinding, lapping, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing, heat treatment, and complex machining.

The Huntington Beach site is Precision Resource's second AM location; this expansion doubles its current industrial AM capacity. Shelton is its first AM location there and can expand further as demand grows. Both facilities will use metal AM systems from 3D Systems, add in-house heat treatment, and expand complex machining — giving customers a more integrated path from printed part to finished component.

On equipment, Precision Resource is adding 3D Systems' DMP Flex 350 Triple metal 3D printing technology, expanding a fleet of DMP 350 systems already in operation. The DMP platform is known for high-throughput production, part quality, and repeatability, supporting batch metal component production across commercial and defense markets.

The facilities are expected to be operational in Q1 2027, coinciding with Precision Resource's 80th year in business. "This expansion is much more than adding machines," said Chris Gratton, Director of Additive and Machine Operations at Precision Resource, describing a connected additive manufacturing network across both locations that offers greater capacity, flexibility, supply-chain simplification, and manufacturing and geographic redundancy.

Reji Puthenveetil, EVP, Additive Solutions and Chief Commercial Officer at 3D Systems, said the expansion demonstrates how additive manufacturing is becoming an integrated production solution for critical commercial and defense applications, combining Precision Resource's manufacturing expertise with 3D Systems' DMP technology.

The expansion signals metal AM's continued shift from prototyping and low volume toward scaled production, and a deepening of the bond between equipment makers and contract manufacturers.
