HP & Hyperion Partner to Commercialize Tungsten Carbide Additive Manufacturing

On October 28, HP Additive Manufacturing and Hyperion Materials & Technologies announced a Strategic Preferred Partner Agreement in Barcelona, advancing the commercialization of tungsten carbide (WC) additive manufacturing and making production-ready components and rapid prototyping more accessible to industrial customers worldwide.

Tungsten carbide is a core hard-material used in cutting tools, wear parts, and other demanding industrial applications. Conventional WC components are typically made via sintering, and complex geometries or customized structures are difficult and costly to produce. Combining tungsten carbide with additive manufacturing aims to exploit design freedom to fabricate parts that are difficult or uneconomical to make by conventional methods.

The collaboration centers on a new HP Metal Jet S100 printer installed at Hyperion's production facility in Barcelona in October 2026. HP Metal Jet is HP's binder-jet metal AM platform, which deposits metal powder and binder layer by layer, followed by debinding and sintering. Hyperion contributes experience across WC manufacturing, sintering, and finishing.

On the materials side, Hyperion launched its CarbiForm™ line of tungsten carbide ready-to-print powders, designed specifically for binder-jet additive manufacturing. CarbiForm is tested to work with HP's Metal Jet printer in combination with Hyperion's sintering operations. Together, the companies say the partnership forms an integrated path from application development and qualification through serial production.

For manufacturers, the expanded collaboration opens opportunities to explore complex geometries, application-specific features, consolidated components, and customized solutions, while shortening development cycles and improving material utilization — retaining the wear and temperature performance that makes tungsten carbide essential in harsh industrial environments.

"Hyperion brings the depth of expertise needed to help scale WC additive manufacturing on HP Metal Jet printers," said Arvind Rangarajan, Head of Product & Strategy at HP Additive Manufacturing. Hyperion CTO Biju Varghese said the agreement combines decades of hard-materials experience with HP's scalable platform, creating "a new manufacturing option for customers looking to create complex, high-performance tungsten carbide components and bring them to production with confidence."

HP will highlight the technology at Formnext, November 17–20 in Frankfurt, Germany, Hall 12.1, Booth D41, where Hyperion representatives will be available for prototyping discussions.
